One Workout Down, A Thousand to Go (PS – Thanks Katy Perry!)

25 Feb

Today was my first day legitimately exercising in over five years.  It’s amazing how terribly out of shape your body can become in that time.  I knew it wouldn’t be easy – but I didn’t know it would be that tough.

I’m the type of person who prefers to workout outdoors.  I hate being on a treadmill – it feels like I’m not getting anywhere.  I have to visualize it – and not on a screen in front of me.

However, I do have a recumbent bike at home and since it’s cold and dreary out today I figured I’d give it a go.

The first 10 minutes were brutal.  I was breathing heavier than I should have, sweating more than I should have.  I was ready to throw in the towel.

Then a song by Katy Perry came on.  A song that has always inspired me.  And I was able to plug through another ten minutes.

In total I did 5 miles in 21 minutes, going a little over 14mph.  I was on level five – whatever that means.  I burned 114 calories and earned 7 activity points on Weight Watchers.

All in all, a successful first day.  I know each day I’ll get stronger and will be able to do more.  This was day 1.  There are many more days to come.

The song that inspired me?  Firework by Katy Perry.
