Bad Cheat Day

23 Feb

Let’s talk about cheat days, shall we?

CheeseburgerTo keep my sanity while I’m on my weight loss journey, I allow myself a cheat day.  It’s a day where I don’t count points (you know, to avoid having a heart attack when I learn what the points actually are).  I don’t go crazy on this day – I typically only have the one splurge.  Maybe some fruit or veggies for breakfast, but that’s it.  And then the evening comes and I splurge.

95% of the time, these splurges are SO worth it.  The food is melt in your mouth delicious.  And any stomach upset I have to deal with because I’m no longer used to eating those types of foods (sorry for the TMI!) … so worth it.

Until this past weekend.

I went to a national food chain for my big splurge.  Typically I eat a healthy crab cake meal at this establishment – but the heck with that, it was cheat day.

So I ordered a burger.  And not just any burger.  I ordered their top of the line burger.  No inferior burger was going to work for me on cheat day!  I’d never had this burger there and that was clearly my mistake.

The burger arrived and I was so ready to dig in.  This was going to be good … great … right?

Wrong.

Now I will fully admit I’m a burger connoisseur.  It has been my go-to food since I was a child and I swear I’ve eaten a burger at every food establishment I’ve ever been to.  So yes, I’m a bit of a burger snob.

But this one had ZERO taste.  The cheese was barely melted.  The tomato was unappetizing and the lettuce was wilted.

I ate it, because it was the only food option I had for the evening.

But man, what a WASTE of a splurge.  And I felt that way all weekend.  It was one of the few times where I almost said “the hell with this, I’m going to have a second cheat day!”  I didn’t, mind you.  But boy did I want to.

So now I know better for next cheat day.  If I’m getting a burger, only get one from somewhere I’ve had them before.  Where I know they’ll be so good that the cheat day is worth it. 🙂

Another Weigh In, Another Decrease & Cheat Days

20 Jan

cheatdayToday I weighed in and was excited to see more weight lost!  This week I was down 1.8 pounds … and I’ll take it!  I’ve still been really good with my points, and despite being a wee bit too indulgent on cheat day, I feel like I have things under control.

So what do you think of cheat days?

I LOVE THEM.  I learned during Weight Watchers attempt #1 that I had to have a cheat day or I’d go absolutely bonkers.  The only downside to the Weight Watchers program is the constant math.  Don’t get me wrong – I have no issue counting points.  But when you’ve made a home cooked meal – and having to do all the math so you can figure out how many points a serving is?  Oh yes, it drives me crazy.  Sometimes I need a break from that.

Why do I love cheat days?  I want to be able to eat out and not count each and every point.  I don’t go crazy – but it’s just nice to have a day where I don’t track.

The other benefit, especially because so many restaurant foods are now stored in the tracker (which means zero research), is that you just want to eat something that you just know is sinfully good.  And if you did look up the points, you’d have a heart attack – because that one meal out is probably your entire points for the day.

Sometimes we HAVE to live a little.  I’m not talking fast food (my Achilles heel) – but sometimes you just have to splurge.  I only do it once a week.

If I don’t do this – I find myself really resenting Weight Watchers and wanting to drop it.  Six days on … one day off.  It works for me.  I can eat without the guilt.  But I also have that little Weight Watchers voice in my head that keeps me in check.

Day 12: Official Cheat Day

1 Mar

Today was my official cheat day.  I don’t eat anything all day and then blow my points (and then some, probably) on a delicious meal out.  It’s the one time each week where I don’t track points and just enjoy the meal.  This week, there was interesting side effect though! More on that later …

Tonight I went to Longhorn Steakhouse.  The meal itself wasn’t terrible points wise – I did look it up.  I had a 70z Flo’s Filet (12 points) with a loaded baked potato (13 points).  I also had a salad, gave most of the croutons away and had honey mustard dressing.  I’m guessing 4 points max for the salad.  So that takes me to 29 points.

But here’s the “fall off the wagon” part – so to speak.  I had about a third of a Texas Tonion.  It’s 31 points for the whole thing – so I had 10 or so points for my portion.  Which takes me to 39 points.  My daily allotment is 43 points, so I think I still came in under that.  I think …

But the side effect?  I was SO full I felt like I was going to explode.  I used to be able to eat this meal and not have any issue packing it away.  Now?  I was uncomfortably full.

My stomach is getting used to the smaller meals and portions – so although cheat day is still a lot of fun, I need to remember that my body is getting used to not stuffing itself.  Skip the appetizer.  Just enjoy the regular meal.

I weighed myself right before heading out to dinner and I was down another pound.  The best news is I’m one small pound away from being out of the 3’s and back into the 2’s.  I can’t wait.

Let’s hope Sunday’s official weigh in puts me in the new weight range.  And closer to my goals!
