The Good and the Bad of the Weight Loss Journey

12 Feb

I had an interesting moment this morning.  I realized it was Thursday and I’ve been back on Weight Watchers now for four days.  It feels like just yesterday I started.  Surely that’s a good sign?

I’m a big girl – one who needs to lose approximately 150 pounds.  Wow … when I type that number, I realize that’s a whole other person.  A “normal” sized person.  I’m not going to dwell on that too much because I’ll get discouraged.  But wow, that’s A LOT to lose.  A whole person.

Moving on …

My stomach has been stretched for years and is used to eating, eating, eating.  And while the total number of points Weight Watchers gives me each day are probably enough to feed a small village, my stomach hasn’t caught up yet.  I have moments where my stomach is clearly battling my head.  It wants more food.

I try to eat things that are low to zero points like carrots, apples, etc.  But have you ever noticed that the things that are zero points are the things that don’t fill you up?  It may settle my stomach for an hour – but then it’s right back to making me feel like it’s time to raid the fridge.

On the plus side – I haven’t given in to the urge.  I’ve not gone over my daily allotted points.  I’ve not even touched my weekly extra points or my activity points.  So there’s a positive!

One of the things I really love about Weight Watchers is that I can eat what I want – as long as it’s within my points.  Example: the other night I had a cheeseburger and fries (made at home).

Normally I wouldn’t eat a burger with a bun and fries – but I was trying to get rid of “bad” stuff that was in the fridge.  This yummy meal was within my points and really helps me feel like I’m not depriving myself.  The next time I have a burger – it’ll be without the bun and with some kind of veggies.  It’s an incredibly low point meal and one of my favorites.

I know not every week or even every day will be as easy as this first week has been.  I know there will be times where I do end up using my extra weekly points.  I’m human.

But the important thing is I’m on the right path.  I’m on the path to HEALTHY.  My goal isn’t to be skinny.  My goal isn’t to fit the unreal standards that society puts on women.  My goal is to be healthy.  It’s that simple!

Until next time …

My 3 Must Have Items While Dieting

21 Mar

One of the many things I love about Weight Watchers is that I can still eat the foods I love while dieting.  I’m part Italian and love pasta.  I can’t imagine being on a diet that cuts that from my eating.  With WW – as long as I stay within my points, anything is fair game.  And that’s the type of plan that works best for me.

There are three staples to my diet — all non-pasta – that I can’t imagine living without.  Here they are:

1. Apple with Peanut Butter

This is such a delicious treat.  I love granny smith apples without peanut butter.  But once I was back on WW, I knew a small dab of the creamy Jif goodness would help keep me on track with protein.  And boy is it delicious!  I have several apples each week.  Hope that saying about an apple a day keeping the doctor away is true!

2. Popcorn

I love this one-point treat.  It fills me up and helps with my tendency to want to snack in the evening.  I lean towards the Orville Redenbacher 94% fat free pop-up bowl kind.

3. My famous “Big Ass Salad”

Ok, so maybe it’s not famous.  But I *love* this salad.  It’s 9 points total, HUGE and a very filling meal.  Lettuce, cucumber, chick peas, fat-free shredded cheese, bacon bits, fat-free croutons and Raspberry Vinagrette dressing.  If I’m running low on points for the day – I’ll make this for dinner instead of something that is 17 or 18 points.  Still just as filling and it’s a favorite!

What are the staples of your diet?  The items you couldn’t live without?

Day 3 – A Success!

20 Feb

Day 3 … dare I say, was a success!  I’m feeling more in control of my eating – not having to snack a bunch during the day.  Drinking lots of water.  Feels good!  I’m also so inspired by the people around me.  People who read this blog, friends and family who are going through the same struggles.  It’s so incredible to have so much inspiration all around me.  I know I can be successful this time.

For breakfast today – I stuck to my norm.  Apple with a tablespoon of reduced fat peanut butter.  No snacks in the AM.

For lunch I had leftover spinach pasta which a few pieces of grilled chicken.  10 points – home cooked.  The frozen ready-to-eat lunch I had the day before was 9 points.  Definitely prefer the fresh stuff!  Had a 100-calorie chocolate chip cookie for a snack with lunch.

Mid-day snack was Special K cracker chips – 27 pieces are just 3 points.  Yum!

Dinner was a hamburger with cheese (no bun) and paprika fries I found in the Weight Watchers cookbook.  Total meal was 15 points and quite filling.

Had an apple and popcorn as an evening snack.

Reached my max points for the day – but I’m okay with that.  It’s only day three.  As a friend pointed out, I need to ease into this – not change my entire life cold turkey.   For me, as long as I’m not exceeding my daily point allotment – I think I’m doing okay.  Baby steps!

Tomorrow begins day 4 … I’m ready to start a new day! 🙂

Each Day on the Weight Loss Journey Gets Easier

20 Feb

By the end of today, I’ll have day 3 under my belt.  Day 1 was terrible.  Day 2 was manageable.  And today I’m doing really good!  I haven’t felt hungry today and haven’t been eating much, which I consider a success.  I had breakfast, had lunch and just one afternoon snack.  Day 1 – I was snacking all day and had no idea how I’d get through it.  And here we are.

The next phase in this is working out.  I run my own business and work from home.  It is SO hard for me to step away from my desk and not work 24/7.  Work / life balance?  I haven’t figured that one out yet.  I love walking – so I just need to push myself to tie up my sneakers and head out the door.  The healthier eating is one part to this equation – the other is the exercise.  Have to do both – no way around it!  So I’ve got to make the time.

As a funny side note – one advantage I’ve realized with DVR’s?  You can skip watching all those commercials with yummy and fattening food.  Just buzz on past it.  It’s great – a wonderful tool when you’re dieting.  🙂

Day 3 status update to come … more for my record keeping.  I know it’ll be helpful to go back and read them.
