Skip the Name Calling

Last week I heard that a movie critic was lashing out at actress Melissa McCarthy in his review of her film “Identity Thief.”  Among other choice words in his review, he called her a hippo and said she had spent her entire career dedicated to being obese.  I didn’t read the actual review (couldn’t stomach it) – but did he spend any time discussing her incredible talent?  I doubt it.

I’ve spent the better part of the 21st century being obese.  I know people look at me differently when I walk down the street.  I’m judged differently than a regular-sized person.  People assume I’m lazy with no respect for myself.  I get that judgement – and in some ways can even understand it, it’s human nature.  Right?

But to take a public platform and call someone a hippo?  I was floored.  He should be ashamed of himself.  He’s a bully, plain and simple.

Anyone who has struggled with their weight knows that it’s not something we dedicate our lives to.  We don’t wake up in the morning and are so thankful we’re obese.  It’s a constant struggle.  Full of hope, doubt, pain and fear.

I’m happy to hear that the critic is now facing a backlash for his incredibly insensitive comments.  Maybe, just maybe, he’ll apologize.  And focus his future reviews solely on the actual film.

It’s 2013 — it’s time to skip the name calling.
